While Lucas was saying goodbye, Kat moved into the kitchen and pulled groceries out of the fridge. After hearing about the tightness of the CIA group, she was convinced that someone was helping Spike stay hidden.

But what did that mean? What was Spike's long-term plan? He didn't seem like the kind of man who would just hide indefinitely. Wouldn't he be trying to find out who had wanted to kill him and what was going on at his company?

Clearly, he'd taken Audrey's words to heart. He'd spoken to Sean. He'd talked to Henry. But he'd given no sign of problems when he'd hosted the launch party. Not that he would have wanted anyone in the influencer pool or media to know if there were problems. Maybe he just hadn't believed the rumors were real. Henry had convinced him that there was nothing going on. Did that make Henry complicit? But he'd gotten shot. He could have died. It was difficult to believe he'd make that part of the plan.

She frowned, biting down on one lip as she sliced up chicken and tossed it into a large pan. Her thoughts returned to Audrey. Was it possible that Spike and Audrey were hiding out together? It didn't seem likely since Audrey was his employee. But how was she surviving without using her credit cards, without contacting anyone but her elderly mother? Audrey could have asked her for help, but she hadn't, which meant she really thought she was in danger.

Maybe Spike was also afraid of putting people in danger. He'd lost one of his best friends in Robert Hartley. It was possible he hadn't gone to Diana because he would have made her a target, too. But she was trained to help, and it sounded like Diana owed him. Then there were Blake Richey and Garrett Waltham, two other longtime friends with the ability to protect him and also to protect themselves. Nothing made sense.

With a frustrated sigh, she rinsed her hands and turned the stove on. Then she moved on to the vegetables. As she sliced a bell pepper, she thought about the other piece of information they'd received, that Victoria Mitchell had ties to Spike when he was with the CIA. She'd never heard that before. It certainly wasn't in any of the public information that went out about the company. Maybe that was to protect whatever Victoria had done in the past.

She turned her head as Lucas entered the kitchen and gave him an inquisitive look. "Did you get any secrets that they didn't want to share in front of me?"

"No. You heard what I heard."

"But you were talking for a few minutes."

"Not about anything important."

There was something in the evasive way he moved his gaze that made her wonder. "Was it about me? About you having me here?"

"It was nothing. Don't worry about it. What can I do to help?"

Deciding not to press, she decided to take him up on his offer. "Want to cut some onions? It's my least favorite thing to do.
